CAPITALISM IN CRISIS
Everywhere you look there is real crisis — housing, environment, democracy, and the economy. All the while, America’s wealthiest are more rich than they’ve ever been. This is no accident. It is the pre-programmed outcome of a capitalist system that is designed to benefit the few at the expense of everyone else.
While it is apparent that capitalism is in decline, it is not immediately clear how we will transition to a better system. But, it is clear to me that our local communities need democratic control over resources and decision-making. A system that leaves thousands of people houseless, children hungry, workers without a living wage, and people without affordable healthcare or any healthcare at all, is a system that needs to change.
Socialism means democratic control of the society we live in. We can have universal healthcare, universal education, public housing, public control of energy resources, public banking, democracy in the workplace, and all of the essential services we need to thrive as a community. It’s time for a shift in priorities. Portland residents should not have to shoulder the burden of crash-and-burn capitalism. We can fight for a better future for all Portlanders.
